From Intern to Mentor
An Ottawa Youth’s Impact on Gender Equity in Energy
Ottawa-based youth leader Rideau Haskins joined StepUp Energy in 2024 as an Energy & Climate Equity Intern. She quickly became a driving force in promoting gender equity, diversity, and inclusion in Canada’s energy sector.
StepUp, a non-profit organization founded in 2019, is committed to transforming the energy industry by breaking down the barriers that keep women and underrepresented voices out of leadership roles. StepUp focuses on inclusion, innovation, and allyship, to build a more balanced, sustainable, and equitable future — and Rideau Haskins was right at the heart of it.

A Powerful Internship Journey
During her internship, Rideau contributed to impactful programs and events that amplified women's leadership in energy. She spoke at the 2024 Canada Home Energy Justice Conference, sharing ideas on integrating home energy justice into broader climate strategies. Her work helped spark critical conversations about intersectionality and inclusion in climate action.
She also supported StepUp’s mission through public awareness campaigns and professional development programming — initiatives that not only uplift women, but also invite men to be active allies in driving systemic change.
Rideau’s passion and leadership didn’t go unnoticed. After completing her internship in February 2025, she was invited to stay involved — this time as a mentor to other Ottawa-area youth participating in the 2025 program.
StepUp’s Ongoing Impact
StepUp continues to make waves across the country. Through workshops, networking sessions, expert panels, and strategic partnerships, the organization is shifting workplace culture in energy management — and pushing toward a future where gender equity is the norm, not the exception. From leadership training and thought leadership publications to the annual StepUp Award for Excellence in Innovation and Leadership, StepUp is showing Canada what a truly inclusive energy sector can look like.
