Youth Leaders Rise

Highlights from PERC’s 2025 Leadership Labs and Alumni Celebration

The Peace and Environment Resource Centre (PERC), in collaboration with Sustainable Capacity Solutions, has had a dynamic and inspiring start to 2025, building momentum through its ongoing Leadership Lab series and celebrating the success of young environmental change makers across Canada. This year, the virtual labs have continued to grow into vibrant hubs of connection, learning, and youth empowerment—and the energy is contagious!

February’s Leadership Lab: Advocacy in Action

We’re still buzzing from the February Leadership Lab, where over 30 passionate youth from across the country gathered virtually to build their skills and expand their networks. The session opened with "Advocacy 101 for Emerging Leaders," a practical and energizing workshop led by Daniel Brunette, setting the stage for an inspiring lineup of guest speakers. .

Participants were treated to a stellar lineup of guest speakers representing impactful environmental organizations from coast to coast, including:

🚲 Velo Canada Bikes

💧 Keepers of the Water

☕ CAFES Ottawa

💚 GentleWays For Our Planet

⚕️ CAPE – Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment

🌱 Ecology Action Centre

Each speaker shared real-world examples of how grassroots advocacy, policy engagement, and collaborative action are making tangible differences in communities and ecosystems across Canada. Youth were given space not just to listen—but to ask questions, exchange ideas, and forge connections with leaders walking the talk in the environmental nonprofit space.

“This was my first time attending a Leadership Lab, and I left feeling inspired and hopeful,” said one participant. “Meeting so many leaders and peers who care deeply about the planet helped me feel more equipped and motivated to make a difference.”

Alumni Spotlight: Celebrating Eco-Internship Journeys

Just a few weeks later, on March 5th, PERC and Sustainable Capacity Solutions teamed up again to host the Eco-Internships Alumni Event—a night dedicated to honouring the impact of the Youth Support Program since its inception in 2019. It was a heartwarming virtual reunion filled with stories, laughter, and the spirit of shared purpose.

Alumni from across Canada joined current participants for an evening of celebration and reflection. The event featured “Where Are They Now” presentations from three incredible graduates of the program:
🌟 Nasha Choudhury
 🌟 Owen Eady
 🌟 Chantel Haigh

These alumni shared how the Eco-Internships program helped shape their careers—from skill development in community outreach and grant writing to growing their confidence as environmental leaders. They spoke about meaningful projects they’ve led or contributed to, and the ways they’re continuing to make waves in the environmental sector.

“I still remember the feeling of purpose and belonging I got from my placement,” said Chantel. “It gave me the foundation I needed to pursue the kind of work I always dreamed of doing.”

The event wrapped up with intimate breakout sessions, where current participants were matched with alumni from their cohort years. This space gave way to honest conversations about career development, making the most of the program, and staying connected within the environmental nonprofit world.

As we reflect on these vibrant sessions, one thing is clear: the energy, talent, and commitment of youth in the environmental movement is stronger than ever. The Leadership Labs and Alumni Event are just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be an impactful year for youth leadership and environmental action.

We are endlessly proud of our participants and alumni, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.

📅 Mark your calendar! Our next Hybrid Leadership Lab is scheduled for April 29th from 2:30–4:30 PM EST, titled "Career Development: Preparing for Interviews." Whether you’re just starting your job search or looking to sharpen your professional edge, this session will be packed with practical tips and confidence-building insights.
